Jail

The old jail sits at the southeast
corner of the
courthouse square. It was built about
1867 from bricks taken from the original jail which was burned by the
Yankees
during excursions into the county during the Civil War, and was built
about
1862. One jail cell remains intact. The original jail was located on
the
northwest corner of Jones Street in Trenton.
The relocated jail was then used until 1939 when the present
courthouse
was completed and jail facilities were located on a portion of the
basement
floor. It is the earliest standing
brick building in Trenton. In 1971 the
old Trenton Jail was entered on the National
Register of Historic Places.
