Student Trooper Program
This program is
jointly sponsored by The American Legion Department of
North Carolina and The North Carolina Highway Patrol. Its purpose is to
create an association between a community’s young people and the men and
women who are responsible for enforcing the laws of our state. We believe that
our youth have a strong sense of patriotism and a high regard for law and order
and that those who participate in this program will develop favorable attitudes
toward law enforcement and will articulate those attitudes throughout their
respective communities and among their peers.
This week-long
program is conducted at the N C Highway Patrol Training
Center in Raleigh. Cadets participate in morning physical
training, close order drill, and disciplined conduct throughout the day under
supervision of counselors and instructors. Sessions are devoted to police
skills, drug detection, firearm safety, precision driving, etc. There are also
tours of the Capitol, Legislative Building, Governor’s Mansion, and the
Highway Patrol Headquarters and Communication Center.
Cadets must have
successfully completed their junior and/or senior year of high school and be of
good moral character and be sponsored by an American Legion Post. Limited
spaces are available at the Training
Center. The sponsoring
post will assume the responsibility for the student’s attendance,
including submitting a properly completed application and physical exam form,
transportation to and from the Center, and tuition fees. Additional information
